Why the Emmies, Why Now?

By Popcorn Avenger

I write this on the afternoon of the second rescheduling of the Television Emmy awards. I wonder why. Why is it so important for this show to be delayed through two times of national tragedy and concern? While I do agree that we should try to get back to our lives as usual, it would seem that the Emmy’s are more concerned about ratings share and refinancing their show, then about the national consciousness. I mean come on, it has been two months and by and large most of us have moved on and readjusted to a nation at war. Okay, give out your awards and move on. Jesus, if I were a nominee, I wouldn’t even bother to show up, not because of fear of a terrorist attack, but because it’s been two freakin’ months and I would not rearrange my calendar for a self serving, self congratulatory award show… and when it comes down to it that is just what it is, a show. And this being show business, the business end needs to also be taken care of. I am sure their will be many words of encouragement from presenters and winners as well as some kind of tribute, but that doesn’t hide the fact that the Emmy’s are not about recognizing excellence in television, but it is about ratings.
