Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones
By Popcorn Avenger

Well movie fans, it's finally here... the wait is over... all of your concerns for the Star Wars franchise can be put to rest. Episode II delivers the goods. The story picks up ten years after Episode I, Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) and his Padawan apprentice, Anakin (Hayden Christensen) are assigned to protect the former Queen and current senetor of Naboo, Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman). During their assignment, Obi-Wan uncovers an intricate plan that includes seperatists, Dark Jedi, an army of clones and a bounty hunter.

That is enough about the plot, what you really want to know is how good is this film. With special effects superior to that of any of its predessesor's and a cohesive plot that will lead us into the classic trilogy, George Lucas has set the franchise back on track. Not only are we given insight into the darkness of Anakin's soul, we can also witness the birth of what is to become the Empire. While I have heard that the acting is stilted, and the Anakin/Amidala relationship lacks chemistry, I think that both were fine. The acting may feel stiff, but we are seeing Jedi, who in essence are very stoic, thoughtful individuals. And Portman and Christensen have the right chemistry of a young couple first discovring love. My only complaint would be that the romantic scenes between the young lovers are trite and cliche. It is easy to see Anakin's love for Padme, but the question is, where did her love come from.

However, on all other fronts, Mr. Lucas has delivered a compelling and delightfully dark saga of power, obsession and even a political subplot that is very timely in this day. My reccomendation is to watch this film more than once, as the canvas that Lucas paints his tail on is so intricate, that it may take multiple veiwings to take it all in.

8.5/10
