Shallow Hal
By Popcorn Avenger

I will be the first to admit that I like the Farrelly Brothers films. I am not one of those snobs who turns-up his at toilet humor. I actually like it when it used correctly a la the Farrelly’s classics Dumb and Dumber and Something About Mary. What I don’t appreciate is the marketing campaign of the new Shallow Hal. This film was marketed to be another film that was sure to yield gross-out like Picasso with paints. Instead what was delivered was a moving story about the expectations of love and compassion of Hal (Jack Black). Hal, after a meeting with Anthony Robbins, sees only the inner beauty in women as their outer beauty. While this message the film does deliver is a positive message about the outer appearance of an individual (we are after all… well, fat), when I go to see a film that was supposed to be fun gross out humor that is what I expect. It happens all to often that I have been mislead by a misleading ad campaign. So while this is a review, it will also serve as an opportunity to rant. All Hollywood studios, try to watch the film before you create an ad campaign and don’t be afraid to market a film “out of the box”, so to speak. While the Farrellys are good at gross-out humor, they are also competent filmmakers in other respects. Don’t try to pigeonhole them.

film= 8/10
advertising= 2/10
