Riding in Cars With Boys
By Popcorn Avenger

Okay, I am all for women having a stronger voice in the film industry and I whole heatedly support the work of such great filmmakers like Jane Campion... but then a film like Riding in Cars with Boys is released and does nothing to advance the prospects for women in film. Just because one has a tough life does not mean that you should write a book about it... and Hollywood, just because someone writes a book about it does not mean it would be a good film. I left this film angry and frustrated at not only the central character, but also the fact that I plunked down $8 on this. I felt as though I was supposed to feel sorry for this woman because she did not make the right choices in her life and she blamed her son for her sorry life. And in the end I am supposed to feel bad that she is alone in a situation she created? UH-UH. I felt like this film not only tried to shove an unsympathetic heroine down my throat, but in the end applaud the fact that she overcame and published her book. I applaud neither her nor this tripe film. If you really want to see a female character do these same things to her offspring and have a more genuine redemption, rent Anywhere But Here.
