The Royal Tenebaums
By Popcorn Avenger

If I had seen this film prior to compiling my year end list, this would have made it as one of the top films of 2001. The Royal Tenebaums follows the lives of a brilliantly dysfunctional family. Royal (Gene Hackman), the estranged patriarch, returns to his family when he runs short of money. While he is back home he begins to connect with his family, especially his grandkids, with whom he takes the time to teach how to have fun (an act that includes jay-walking and shoplifting). Gene Hackman, who has twice been recognized for his acting by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, deserves another nod from this distinguished body. From a script penned by director Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, The Royal Tenebaums is a fun look into the dysfunction of a family who appears to have it all… including Dalmatian mice.
