By Popcorn Avenger It has been almost eight years since Jack Ryan's last on-screen adventure, and in The Sum of All Fears he returns with a new face. Ben Affleck takes over the role from Harrison Ford, and breathes new life into the franchise. In this new film, we see Ryan's first big mission with the CIA. Under the guidence of Will Cabot (Morgan Freeman), Ryan uncovers a German terrorist's plan to destroy both the United States and Russia. Unfortunatly, the individuals who need to hear Ryan are unwilling to listen. Affleck brings a fresh eyed freshness to the role that both prior Jack Ryans did not posess. While the direction is pretty standard for an action film, one unique feature is the use of satallite photos for each establishing shot reminding us that the world is constantly under survaillence, yet at the same time illustrating how easy it is to lose a needle in the haystack.
