By Popcorn Avenger With plans for a third Ghostbusters film in permanent limbo, Ivan Reitman decided to take the formula and apply it to life forms from another planet. Scholarly misfits from an Arizona community college look to make a name for themselves by investigating a meteor that touched down in the desert. Within the crater of the meteor, new life begins to evolve. David Duchovney, Orlando Jones, Sean William Scott, and Julieanne Moore(in a rare comedic performance) form the investigative team that eventually needs save the world. Like many films that try to copy a formula that worked successfully, it doesn’t quite hit the mark. Duchovney's Fox Mulder-mode(flat stoicism) is perfect for this former government biologist, and Moore aptly fulfills the part of his foil and love interest. Jones and Scott are perfect fits for this style of comedy. Evolution is an enjoyable home viewing experience. As for the Special DVD features, it has an HBO First Look and creature designs and drawings, for anyone interested in special effects. THe disc also contains several funny deleted scenes (a refreshing change from many DVD's that have scenes that go nowhere). Of interest is a scene where Duchovney's girlfriend leaves him and the original take of Duchovney visiting Moore's hotel. Another enjoyable feature is commentary with Reitman, Duchovney, Jones and Scott. This is definately worth checking out.   Back to Video/DVD Index |
