Moulin Rouge
By Popcorn Avenger

Baz Luhrmann, who reinvented Shakespeare for a new generation, is now re-envisioning the Hollywood musical. It has been years since a decent live action musical has even been produced (Sorry Madonna, Evita doesn’t even come close). With a mixture of lavish art and costume design, and modern pop classics, Luhrmann tells a touching story of doomed love. Christian (Ewan Mcgregor) is a young writer who travels to Paris to be inspired by a bohemian lifestyle and falls in love with a young Moulin Rouge dancer, Satine(Nicole Kidman). This musical has adapted th quick visual sense of an MTV video and mixed it with the grandeur of a Hollywood musical and the result is a film which successfully recreates the musical genre for a new generation.

Moulin Rouge is part of an impressive two disc DVD set. If you have an interest in the costumes and design of this spectacle, then you are in for a treat because with this DVD you have behind-the-scenes features as well as choreography and design features. I particularly enjoyed the MTV Movie Awards presentation of “Lady Marmalade”. This DVD is definitely worth checking out for those who enjoy production documentaries.
